Chapter 1: From asking to conversing
I stopped asking and started conversing with the Holy Spirit and that completely changed my spiritual life. I want to start this message in a different way. I want to ask you a question. If the Holy Spirit were sitting right next to you now with no rush, no church service, no music, no one else around, what would you talk about with the Holy Spirit? Not what would you ask for, but what would you discuss with him?
Because there is a difference between the two. I discovered this on my own journey with him. I knew how to ask. I knew how to present my needs. I knew how to enter God's presence with a whole list of requests. But as time went on, a question arose within me. Diane, are you seeking the Holy Spirit only for what he can do? Or do you truly want to know him? That question really stirred me. Why? Because asking is easy.
Conversing, however, requires a relationship. Asking might take 2 minutes, but getting to know someone takes a long time. Asking for an answer is one thing. Wanting to know someone's heart is something else entirely something very different. And that was when I began doing something that completely transformed my spiritual life. I started talking to the Holy Spirit about things that had nothing to do with making a request.
Yet, it helped me grow immensely in my spiritual walk. I am going to share with you a bit of those conversations, things I've learned from him over many years. That is how my relationship with the Holy Spirit began so long ago. I started by saying, "Holy Spirit, may I ask you a question?" And you know what's interesting? Sometimes the question wasn't about what I needed, but about what I wanted to understand better.
I would ask, "Why did God do it this way?" or Holy Spirit, why are the things you reveal to some people that others seem never to perceive? And I would say, Holy Spirit, why do certain truths in the Bible seem simple to one person and so profound to others? I kept asking, saying, "Holy Spirit, why are the moments when I read a passage from the Bible, and then much later when I read it again, it seems to open up before me?" Then I began to realize something.
The Holy Spirit is not just the one who helps me find answers. He also awakens questions in me that I never would have thought to ask before. And that is deeply profound. Because sometimes we think spiritual maturity means having all the answers. But I discovered that isn't the case.
Chapter 2: Learning to walk with God
Sometimes maturity is learning to ask the right questions. Maturity is learning to ask better questions. And one of the questions that really stirred me concerned Enoch. I was thinking about that man who appears in Genesis. The Bible says that Enoch walked with God and that alone would be enough to make me pause and reflect because think about it. The Bible simply says that Enoch knew God. It doesn't just say that Enoch spoke with God.
The Bible says that Enoch walked with God. And I began to ask, "Holy Spirit, what does it really mean to walk with you?" That question stayed with me for a few days because we often use the phrase I walk with God. But what does that mean? Because there is movement in this verse. There is life together. There is a path. There is a journey mean? What does it mean on a Monday? What does it mean when no one is watching?
What does it mean when you are tired? What does it mean when you need to make a decision or receive unexpected news or when God hasn't answered you yet? So, what does it look like to walk with God through all these moments? And I asked, "Holy Spirit, what did Enoch know?" I went even further. I said, "Holy Spirit, what did Enoch understand about you? Why does the Bible say so little about him? Why is a man who lived for so many years summed up in just a few words?
Why is there such a great silence surrounding his life? And I asked, "Holy Spirit, who is this man whom the Bible sums up by saying he
Chapter 3: Prioritizing the relationship
walked with God?" And I continued the conversation saying, "Holy Spirit, I also want to know one more thing." And this is where my conversation began to go a bit deeper. I asked, "Why, Holy Spirit, am I so curious about what Enoch saw when I should be more interested in learning how Enoch walked?" And that question began to confront me because it is so easy to be fascinated by the spiritual world, isn't it?
It is easier to want to know about the mysteries of angels, about dimensions, about spiritual mysteries. But the Holy Spirit began to teach me something. And he said, "Before wanting to know what exists in the invisible world, learn to walk with me in the world you are living in the visible world." And that is powerful. We want to discern angels, yet we cannot even discern what is happening within our own hearts.
We often want to hear God, but we cannot remain silent in his presence for 5 minutes. So I came to this conclusion. Holy Spirit, perhaps the first mystery you wish to reveal to me lies not outside of me but within me. That was when I better understood the meaning of communion. Communion is far deeper than simply having a moment of prayer. It is a dimension of in our relationship with God. It is a place where one learns to perceive, receive, and live out what God is communicating.
I began to wonder how many people want to hear God without learning to live in communion. They want a word but not a relationship. They want a revelation but not steadfastness. They want a spiritual experience but not transformation. And there is something I consider very serious. If a spiritual experience does not draw me closer to Christ, it should not become the center of my life. The supernatural is not the goal.
The goal is God knowing him and having a genuine relationship with him. Some time ago, something very interesting happened. I was taking my son to school when I passed beneath a beautiful tree and the Holy Spirit spoke to me. He said, "Do you see this tree? Do you see those seven crowns? Do you see how the leaves are starting to fall?" I replied, "Yes." He then said, "A spiritual cycle is unfolding in your life just like this.
When all the leaves fall and new ones begin to sprout. When the tree is full of new foliage, you will enter a new spiritual cycle and a major change will take place. Every now and then, as I drove my son to school and passed under that tree, I would recall the Holy Spirit's words. Time went by, and one day while at home, I wondered, I wonder what the foliage on that tree looks like now. I thought about it briefly, but soon forgot.
Then another day while taking my son to school, I passed under the tree again, I looked up and saw that new foliage had appeared, new leaves had emerged, and I immediately remembered the Holy Spirit's words about entering a new spiritual cycle. I began to reflect on my life and everything I had gone through up to that point. I said, "Wow, Holy Spirit, it's true. I really am living a new spiritual cycle today." In that moment, I began to converse with the Holy Spirit, for he explains and teaches me things in my daily life.
Chapter 4: The essence of communion
Having a deep real friendship with the Holy Spirit is priceless to me. It makes all the difference. That is why I seek day after day to deepen my relationship with him. One thing I have learned from the Holy Spirit is that he cares about the small things in your life and wants to walk with you. This moves me deeply because we may have formed an image of God as so distant thinking he is only interested in great matters.
Yet Jesus taught us to call God father and the 8 minutesHoly Spirit is not merely an energy or an impersonal force. He is the spirit of God. The Holy Spirit cannot be treated simply as a religious experience. That is why the apostle Paul, that great apostle of power, spoke of the grace of our Lord Jesus, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Therein lies the secret to having daily communion with the Holy Spirit of God.
And if the Holy Spirit of God is with me, why not talk to him? The Holy Spirit helped me understand that the relationship comes first, followed by what God chooses to reveal. The journey comes first, followed by spiritual mysteries. And this is vital for your life, for our lives, because this protects us from a very dangerous trap, wanting revelation or wanting more revelation more than we want a true relationship with God. And one thing the Holy Spirit taught me and that I want to teach you is that perhaps God doesn't want to show you more.
Perhaps he wants to teach you how to see because there is a difference between God placing something before my eyes and God changing the way I perceive things. A person can receive spiritual information and remain the exact same person. But when perception changes, life changes. When you begin to perceive God in everyday life, you will never look at the everyday the same way again. And when you begin to perceive God's presence, silence ceases to be empty.
When you begin to experience true fellowship, prayer ceases to be an obligation. When you begin to know the Holy Spirit, you don't need to constantly search for something extraordinary because the presence itself has become extraordinary and that is wonderful. Early in my journey with the Holy Spirit, I used to pray the same prayer. Holy Spirit, teach me to spend more time in your presence and that is a difficult prayer because we are a generation that wants quick answers. Yet God works deeply.
I might ask, "Show me." But he might answer. abide. I might ask, "When?" And his answer might be, "Trust." I might ask, "But why?" And perhaps he would answer, "Walk with me." And you will discover why. Because perhaps one of the greatest things the Holy Spirit wants to teach our generation is precisely this. God's presence does not need to be manufactured. It needs to be recognized. Then you might say, "But Diane, have you stopped asking?"
No. I keep asking. I keep praying. I keep seeking but now there is something different. I don't want to simply enter God's presence carrying a list of requests. No, I want to enter carrying my heart. I want to converse. I want to ask questions. I also want to listen. I want to learn. I want to know him. I want to walk with him. Because after so many years, I've realized something. The greatest privilege isn't God revealing a mystery.
Chapter 5: Awakening a new generation
The greatest privilege is having fellowship with the one who knows all mysteries. And if one day he wants to show me more about heaven, I will see it. But I do not want to trade any spiritual experience for that. Because experiences pass, manifestations pass, but friendship with the Holy Spirit that can transform an entire life will remain. And perhaps this is the legacy I want to leave behind. I do not want a generation to know only my voice.
I want them to learn to recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit. I want them to learn to seek God. I want people to open the Bible and ask, "Holy Spirit, what is it that I do not yet understand?" People who when facing a decision ask, "Holy Spirit, how do you want to lead me?" People who in the midst of suffering say, "I do not understand, but I will not go through this alone because I know, Holy Spirit, that you are with me."
That is the generation I want to awaken. Not a generation passionate only about mysteries, but a generation passionate about God. Not a generation that spends its time chasing after piritual experiences, but a generation that lives in real communion with God. Not a generation that merely talks about the Holy Spirit, but a generation that truly walks with him. Now, I ask you the question that started it all.
If the Holy Spirit were sitting right next to you without the church, without music, with no one else watching and said to you, "Son, daughter, today you don't need to ask for anything. Just talk to me. What would you say to the Holy
Chapter 6: Invitation to intimacy
Spirit?" Write it in the comments. Don't write a religious phrase. Write what you would say to him from the bottom of your heart right now. Because someone might read your answer and realize they too need a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit. that they too can talk to him. And perhaps that is how a generation begins to awaken. One person at a time, one conversation at a time, one heart at a time until what started as a private conversation transforms into an entire generation that has learned to walk with God.
A powerful spiritual key I'm sharing with you now is this. I stopped asking only for answers and started seeking a relationship. I discovered that when you truly begin to know the Holy Spirit, even the mysteries of God cease to be mere curiosities and become an invitation, saying, "Come closer. Get to know me better." That is why I am on this channel to awaken a generation to deep intimacy with the Holy Spirit.
