Chapter 4: Sacrifice for fame

Chapter 5: The call to deliverance

Chapter 6: Upbringing and football
welcome Khalil. Man, I I've been waiting for this conversation. I'm just grateful that you're here. I'm grateful to be here, brother. And as I said to you off camera that I truly feel the presence of the Holy Spirit in all the videos I've watched so far of your podcast. And I believe that tonight we're not here for me or for you, but for Jesus to set people free, bro. So through our testimony as the word says by the word of their testimony and the blood of the lamb.
So therefore we are going to share what the lamb did in my life to set me free from whatever addiction I was in. And today we are going to glorify the name of Jesus. So I'm very excited to see what God will do. Amen. Amen. Listen listen my brother. I'm not going to hold you up. I want to first start because I kind of got the the glimpse of your your story, but you grew up in a Muslim household. I want to know how you went from there to you're converted to Christianity.
Then you experienced some dark things in the world of the athletics and even the testimonies that you've heard from others surrounding. So let's start you with your upbringing in a Muslim household and how did you get converted? you know, I was born in the Ivory Coast in West Africa, okay? And in 1982, and as far as I can remember, as a child, I was always playing football. I was sleeping with a football, eating football.
Everything was football. In the US, you call it soccer. [laughter] And and as a Muslim, you know, it's not something you choose. It's just that this is the religion that the family does and practice is just passed on to you. So now that I'm with Christ, I can realize that it was a spirit that was passed on to me. You understand? So and that spirit is like you can't really say yes or no. It's not like Christianity where you say yes or no.
It's just something is passed on to you. And as I grow into it, we were going to the mosque doing our five prayers a days and years passed, you know, the years was passing. In 2001, we left the Ivy Coast to go to France. And as we arrived in Paris in France, we stayed there for a couple of years.
Chapter 7: Death of mother
And after 6 years, one night went to bed, say good night to my mom. I have a big brother, a younger sister, and I'm the middle one. And my mom was a single mom because my father was not there with her and he wasn't married to her and she was struggling. But one night as I say in 2007 in May 2007 we said good night to mommy and the next morning she was dead on her on her bed. All of all of a sudden like that she was gone and we were there three children.
I was 12 going to turn 13. My sister was nine and my big brother was 16. Like the dead body of my mom in front of my eyes. It was, you know, looking back at it, I'm like, God, you are a miracle maker. Because just sharing that with my heart, you know, it's like when I look back at seeing her body, I was like, that's it. My life is finished, bro. My life is finished. I rather commit a suicide, you know.
And if you ask me how I'm here, I I can only say is because of the name of Jesus. But how I left Islam to enter Christianity,
Chapter 8: Islamic questioning
it was a process. And the process was that every day I will do my five prayers. But then at some point I decided to read the Quran. And as I read the Quran, I can see in the sun alimin verse 3:45 to 47 that Surat is saying to Mary that she will conceive a child. H and that child will be from God. And Mar is responding to the angel, how is that even possible? I'm a virgin. And the angel said, the spirit of the Lord will come on you.
As I was reading that, I was confused because I was like that mean that baby is not normal. Right? Come on. And as I continue to read the Quran, I study the Quran tells me that Issa who is Jesus is the only one that is pure, sinless in the Quran. Another surah also reveals to me that Issa is the word of God. And I was like, who is this Isa? And I started to read more. I went to one mosque and I show him the verse that says that among all the prophet of Allah, including Muhammad, they all committed sin.
They are sinners. But the only one that left the perfect life was Issa. But the Quran also tells me that only Allah is sinless. So the Quran was telling me that Issa is God. Do you know what I mean? So it's like as I'm reading that I was like the the imam was like stop reading. Stop reading. No. Yes. He told me stop reading. That does not this is not a good translation. I was like this is Arabic. You know what I mean?
And then when he says that as I was very stubborn I was like no I'm going to read more. [laughter] And as I read more, I came to the conviction that I need to search for a solution. Come on. I was playing football professionally.
Chapter 9: Professional career starts
You know, I signed my first pro contract as a 16 years old. Started to earn a lot of money and sexual immorality. I was playing in the UK. I played in France. I played in Belgium. I played in in Germany. I played in Israel and wow the country where I was reading and questioning the Quran was Switzerland where I was playing football in Switzerland and as I I was there reading that and it does not make sense and I was like what's that and I started to study about religion because in my background in my football academy once my mom died you know to come back to when she died we flew to Ivory Coast and when we flew to Ivory coast.
Wow. God is a miracle maker. But just remember, I was not a I was not a Christian back then. Yeah. We flew to Ivory Coast as Muslims. We are doing the burial, Muslim burials. And I'm playing football because football was the only thing that would help me to escape the pain of not having my mom. And as I'm playing one football coach from the GMG Academy Thailand who's formed like the team like players like Yay Salomonalu famous Ivory and soccer player.
Yes. and he he started it in Ivory Coast but then the Thai government told him to come to Thailand to do similar things. So he took 12 Ivorian to Thailand to raise the level of the Thai player. And I was part of the 12 people because one of the coaches was at my mom funeral. Wow. You know, he saw me playing at the funeral. He was like, "This boy is talented." God knew that if I would go back to Paris without my mom, I wouldn't be here in front of you because I would be in gangs.
Most of my friends in Paris end up in prison selling drugs, you know. So God knew that he has to send me all the way to Thailand to play football that I love. That's why I often say to the people who have the religious spirits, let the prodigal son come back. Do not chase them. Because before to be your children, they are God's children and they are on loan to you. They belong to the Lord. The word say if your mom and dad forsake you, the Lord will rescue you.

Chapter 10: The mysterious journalist
and in Thailand why I'm sharing that is because I was going to the Buddhist temple because you are lost. Islam is not really a religion can give you peace in your soul. You know, you are trapped inside. And then I didn't find peace there in Buddhism because it was all all about me me. And when I left Thailand at the age of 16 to sign my first pro contract in the UK, that's where the journey begin.
And as the journey begin as a professional player, mind in your head that this is still me being Muslim, right? So one day as I finish a game, a journalist came up and walk up to me. And when he woke up to me, he says to me [snorts] that he would like to do interview because I was in Thailand and in different countries and he would like to to to basically know who I am. So the fan will know who I am as well. And as I accept few weeks later we meet for a coffee.
As I sit down, he looked me straight in the eyes. He say, "Listen, young man, I'm not a journalist." like, okay, if you are an agent, I already have a football agent. If you're a president of a club, I'm not interested because I'm happy in the club that I am. He said, no, we rule this world. And I was like, what? Okay, bear in mind that's me, young Khalil, as a Muslim, not a Christian. Yes.
Chapter 11: Selling your soul
But then when he says that he rules the world automatically the voice of my mother when I was like 7 8 9 10 years old my mom kept telling me Khalil do anything you want but don't you ever sell your soul I'm like and I'm like mom what do you mean what is a soul she say just don't you sell your soul don't ever do that in French of course because we were speaking French and that did not make sense to me that's why I'm speaking to Every mother listening, do not stop to plant seed in the ears of your kids because faith come from what you hear. The child may not be listening but you have planted a living seed inside him. Jesus that he will remember in the appointed day and that appointed day for me I was in front of this man and the voice of my mom was like an umbrella brother. The money is telling me that they rule this world and I'm hearing the voice of my mother telling me Khalil do not sell your soul. Do not sell your soul.
Then imagine you are not spiritual. Well, you think you are not spiritual because you are dead in the flesh, right? And the spirit. But I am hearing that voice. So I can't explain it. And then I'm looking the guy in the eyes and I'm like, what do you mean? He said, "You are talented, but this world, if you want to be part of the elite, you have to pay the price to enter the elite." I'm like, "Okay, what do I need to do?"
I I was pretending I was stupid, right? Because I could hear do not sell your soul. So, I was I knew that he was after my soul then. And that's where as a young man, few days before that, I was in sexual immorality. All of a sudden, as a young man, I started to believe in the spiritual realm that this is a reality. Oh, that was no longer a game. That was the re something real in front of my eyes. And I'm like, okay, what do I need to do to enter the elite?
[snorts] And he said, everything cost something. If you agree, I'm going to give you a date and time. We're going to go and we will initiate you. There is different type of way you can join. You can either sign with your own blood and with your own blood you're going to have a specific year that you're going to die. So let's say you become a pro for 20 years and after 20 years you will die and if you don't want to die you can give your sister or relative to extend the pact.
And I was like bro he said all of this of course face to face.
Chapter 12: Refusing the offer
He said all of this and I asked him but how will I kill? I you go to prison. He said, "Young man, the hospital we control. We control. We rule this world. Any person that disappeared, we control. So do not be afraid." And I like [snorts] what what does he mean by they control. Now with many years passed because this is over 10 years story I'm telling you right now. With many years I understand what he mean that that they control.
You understand? Yes. And he was like [sighs] and I said okay how will my sister die if I give her he say it will be probably a cancer or car crash it will depend on the circumstances of her life how disobedient she is to God. So that's mean when you walk in disobedience doors are open for them to enter. So you will see sometime God will ask you to walk in obedience and you are being disobedient. you are the Bible say that the salary of sin is death you know and they're just waiting because he say in two Peter that your enemy the devil is crawling like a lion ready to devour right so when he was saying that to me I was so young and I was like not even Christian I was still Muslim but it's the voice of my mother that say do not sell your soul and I look at him and I say listen I stayed polite because you know as an African man I was like maybe this guy can kill me or something you know.
Yes. [laughter] I said listen thank you very much for the offer but I rather die the way I am. I don't want to do any of this. And he started to be hungry now. That's where his energy changed. His physically ch like his energy was like trying to dominate me like you will never be the player you want to be. you will never reach the level you want to reach. Every president of clubs, every superstar that you worship are part of it.
You can't without us. And I was like, what? As a young man, that's my dream to become someone that collapse, brother. It collapsed on the ground because I worked hard in Thailand. I work at hard in the academy to become the next Jerry Andre because my dream was to become the next Jerry Andre to make my mother proud. Like I always said, mom, I will make you proud. But now today I know that making my mother proud is to serve God.
Come on. You know the counterfeit, the enemy is a liar. You know, but then I refused that. But when I went back home, I couldn't sleep for at least 4 months with the light off because I would see him in the corner. I went to my teammate and asked my teammates, "Have you ever heard about this journalist?" He said, "Bro, we never heard of him." Now, fast track many years back now in 2016 in Switzerland where I was questioning Islam.
fasttracking that when I was questioning Islam, I made this prayer. I was in Thailand.
Chapter 13: Conversion to Christianity
I've seen these people asking me to sell my soul. There is over 3,000 religion, but there is one God. We live in a in a messed up world. I say the closest I did get is Islam. But Issa, even in Islam, Issa, you seems to be God. So Issa, if you are God, reveal yourself to me. Brother, the next day, next day as I finished training in the street of Geneva, August 2016, a pastor from England speaking French on the street, Pastor Anthony Cooper, stopped me on the street and he said, "Young man, do you know Jesus loves you?"
When he says that I have no explanation as to describe that it was his word transfer life into my heart that was dead when my mom died. Wow. It his word brought life into my heart and I was like ah my first question to him was like how can Jesus love someone like me because I know what I'm doing at night. How how can he loves me? It's not possible. Hypocrite doing all sort of evil things. How? Sexual immorality.
How? And he say he simply loves you because that's what the Bible said that he loved you before even you knew him. I was like whoa. and he said you know let's meet and talk and then immediately from that street we enter his church started to ask him about Jesus I told him about the surat like I'm talking to you now and he was explaining who is Jesus but this pastor was sad because few weeks before meeting me on the street he lost his job so I'm telling someone tonight you may have lost something but give thanks to God because everything tastes good for those who love God so that person lost his job he was sad But he lost his job because there was a young footballer that he needed to meet every day after training to preach the gospel. Oh my god.
Imagine he would stay at work. He would not be able to preach the gospel to me after training. So after every training, bro, I take my car drive straight to the church. After training, straight to the church. He will pump me with the Bible. And that's why I said, "Listen, Jesus is not Issa. He's Yeshua Hamashiach, my savior. I will accept him in my life. If
Chapter 14: Giving up football
I gave my life to Jesus and I said radically Lord Jesus I will walk with you and that's how I left Islam because I was like if Jesus loves me with such a love that is so pure and I have not heard from YouTube or any TV but I saw with my eyes that the elite they exist they are the one rulings government bro I better run behind Jesus because if you don't have Jesus in this world you are cooked. It's difficult. Yes. You know, and and as things were moving, as I gave my life to Jesus and got baptized back in 2016, this is where the the the the the situation start. And Jesus said to me, Khalil, I've called you.
I've called you to serve me, but you can't serve me if your eyes are still in your heart. I'm like, if your what? Your Isaac still in your heart. Oh my gosh. And I'm like, what's my Isaac? He said, go and study this the story of Abraham. Isn't it? I told Abraham, come out of your tent and look at the sky. I'm like, and that's why God gave me that vision. He said, you see, Khalil, your tent is your way of thinking into this world that you in.
But Abraham came out of his way of thinking that Sarah couldn't conceive because around him many men's were giving birth a lot of children. But Abraham was like yo I can't have a descendant. I can have children. God say come out of your way of thinking and enter my way of thinking. Look at the sky. If you can come the stars this will be the number of your children. I said whoa. Okay. And that's what the vision when I came back from the vision.
God say now football is your Isaac. If you want me to use you give up football. Like, bro, oh my gosh, how do you want me to give up football? I'm engaged with my wife to be. We are planning to to get married, have children, and football is my I have it's my job because I stopped school. I was 12. God say no, you don't need money to live. You need me. When I created Adam and Eve, there was no bank.
There was no money. There was no currency. They had me. And I was like, "Bro, God, this is like I can't." He say, "Yeah, that's where I'm teaching you. The biggest prison every human are in, but they don't know they are in." And I cried, bro, because God gave me this image that my own flesh was a prison that my soul was in it. And I hold my head and I was crying. And I say God, how many people don't know that they are in a prison that they don't know?
How many people are in a prison to please people? And that prison is like something that God Jesus came and show us the way that lead to the father. He crucified the flesh. He He crushed it. He said, "Come and give me your Isaac. Stop football because I don't want you to live the life of the flesh. I want you to live the life of the spirit and football will stop you from it." I said, "Whoa." I was convicted like Abraham I took my football because football was everything in my heart and God say I'm a jealous God I want this place and that's how now
Chapter 15: Escaping football contract
took my Isaac to the mountain so football and I was like how do you want me to go to tell my president which I have two years contract remaining to break my contract and just walk off. He said, "The same way I have delivered my people from Egypt, I will deliver you from your Egypt, which is football." And I'm like, "Okay, do not worry. I told Jeremiah, I will extend my hand and put my word into his mouth. Go to speak to him.
There is no heart on earth that I can't change or turn." Believer not, you were actually making you were making money. I was at the I was at the peak of my career like the peak. I was making serious money. In fact, when I decided to stop, I had an offer from Arabic country that was triple my salary. So it was is not a decision where it's it's like salvation is individual and the prison I was in the flesh so my flesh was a way of thinking that this is the way this world should be ruled.
If you have money you can buy a house you will have a mortgage and car and then that's mean you are prosperous and God say no that's not the way to prosper. when your soul prosper this is prosperity and your soul can only prosper in me and I was like wow okay then I went to the president knocked the door and I was shaking I was like what I will tell him and then the holy spirit inspired me said tell him about your story that you had no father and your mom was a single mom you lost your mom quite young and you refused to be the dad that is not going to be there for your children. You want to be there for them at home and share with your heart this story. And I told him that I didn't have a dad. As soon as I open my own mouth on that, he was crying.
He said to me he also did not have a that and he's very inspired that the fact that I want to support my kids and he's really touched and he want to respect and all that he broke my contract and give me two month salary that doesn't happen you know that that that never happens it never happened but that's why I'm saying to people whoever is listening that is thinking that God cannot free you from Egypt listen God free his people from Egypt plus they had money to leave Egypt [laughter] So it's like he freed me from football plus I had salary to left leave football. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. It's just that obedience worth more than sacrifice. People walk in disobedience. And therefore because you are in disobedience, you cannot see that God is the same yesterday, today and forever.
Oh, and that's why he showed me the picture that in Geneva for me it was the genesis of my life. And in Genesis everything happened from day one to day seven. He said now you see you accepted Jesus is day one. Let let there be light. And now I'm putting back in order your life. And he's putting my mind and my heart together. Because when my mind and my heart is in the right place, therefore the flesh cannot come and tempt me.
The flesh can't because the flesh knows that he lost it all. He lost it because you don't care anymore about what people will think of you. You care about what God thinks of you. Come on, man. You're not there to please people, but you there to please God. I want to ask you specifically about that. You were in love of football, that means that the people that were on your team were very close. And I'm sure making that decision, did you begin to consult your teammates?
How did you feel about the fact that you have to disappoint them? If you were any good, then your absence would have hurt the team. What was your state of heart and mind as it related to your teammates? for me my statement in
Chapter 16: Shining light in locker room
very good question because my heart was basically blinded for Jesus in every ways even that's a good example because you know in in in in the dressing room the teammate often will share videos that they've done the night before and show off of the things that they done in darkness but as soon that I would step in the dressing room they will stop sharing they will say oh the pastor here hey stop stop this pastor so even themsel They knew that there was a change in me. So they called me pastor. That's why I often say in our ministry now to footballers that I ministered to. I told them okay if you are in a dressing room and the people in darkness are comfortable talking about sexual immorality in front of you that's mean your light is not shining. Because if your light shine the darkness cannot talk about darkness next to the light.
It's not possible. Come on. Come on. If your light shine, people will see that your presence disturbed the darkness. And I back then in the dressing room, I felt bad. I was like, why is it they change topic? They don't want to talk to me. And his letter on the Holy Spirit said, no, in the spiritual realm is the demons around them don't want to push you away from the dressing room. Basically in that dressing room, I felt sad because they were stopping talking about the things of the darkness.
But you know because themselves they are dead people in a dead body but they don't know they are dead. As I said earlier the flesh is a prison because they're in prison they are just puppet in the end of those spirit because the word tells us that we not battling against flesh and blood but spirit. Come on and the prince of the earth and in a football dressing room the atmosphere is very demonic is very difficult for you. For example I would give you a perfect example before I answer your question. I would I always say to myself, I will never buy a Rolex because of the value my mom gave me.
But then you enter the dressing room and you see your teammate having Louis Vuitton Rolex or the M Pique, you're like, I'm not going to do it. One month, two months, three months, all of a sudden you see yourself also buying a Rolex. Why? Because the atmosphere around you is really hard and condensed. Then yes, when I gave my life to Christ and they saw the difference, anytime I would step in the dressing room, they will stop talking about whatever they were talking about.
And back then I did not know is the light that I carry because Jesus then told us that we are the light and the salt of this world. But then the people then will come to me and ask me Khal, what change? Because I was the first one, the frontliner to take them to the nightclub back then. But now they see the radical change and they're like what's happening because the light is shining they coming and asking question you see and if you are equipped enough you can share and respond accordingly and bring them to the light as well. Come on.
So, so understanding all of that, it pushed me then walking with Jesus and I was like, "Okay, let me study football.
Chapter 17: The spiritual price of sports
Who created football and why they created football?" Oh, Lord have mercy. Come on. Come on. So, when I made my research, you can see that they copied on the Roman Empire and the gladiator of the time. You know, they were fighting for people to worship them and they were fighting to death. But this time they created a different type of gladiator that will fight and the elite will drink from their energy and the energy of the stadium because there is something spiritual that happen when people are in a crowd worshiping the same football team and fighting each other because human being are designed to compare compete a competition in the flesh and that's the result of the fall of Adam and Eve but because of the sin we always v the ego and the and the pride in us want to compete and fight which is the opposite of the kingdom of God which is unity, family and brothering, bringing things together, fighting together, not against each other.
You see, so now that's why I ask always this question to moms and dad that tells me Khalil with your football contacts, can you help my son to play football? My first question is to them, have you asked God carefully if God want him to be a missionary in the world of football? Otherwise, if that's not the case, he will lose his soul. because you are sending him in a field, not just a physical field, but a spiritual atmosphere that will push him to do things that he can't control. Oh my gosh.
So, so you understand you will try to say, "Okay, I want to walk with Jesus." But then you in a dressing room, you end up doing things that you don't want to do. How much more imagine how difficult it is for us that now that don't play football. Paul said that I do not do what I want to do. I do what I do not want to do. And if I do what I do not want to do is not me that does it but the flesh that has been sold to sin.
So that mean Paul is telling you to live the life of the spirit. But football is asking you to live the life of the flesh. God is asking you to live the life of the spirit. And then that's why in the teaching I give to those footballer, I tell them guys, unless you are one with Christ and you let Christ lives in you, it's going to be very difficult. And I give them this parable. The Bible tells us there was a rich young ruler.
He had everything, was doing everything almost perfectly. And he asked Jesus, "What should I do?" I'm paraphrasing, sorry. And Jesus told him, "Sold everything and follow me." And the young man went sad. The Bible tells you that he was sad. And Jesus gave this parable to his disciple. It's going to be easier for a camel to go through an eye of a needle than a rich man into the kingdom of God. Because God is so gracious.
He don't want to say it's going to be impossible for a rich man. But I've been in that sight. When I tell people the fact that I stopped football and lost everything, bro, the Bible says it in a perfect way. The one who will want to save your life will lose it. But he who loses his life for me will save it. So I didn't lose anything by stopping football. Actually I gained everything. Come on. When I share this with people, I'm like, God, please show them that the flesh is a prison.
Chapter 18: True cost of elite success
Show them that the flesh is a prison. And unless Christ is in it, there is no way you can live the life of the spirit in a prison. He said he come to set the captive free. He's not coming to set you from physical prison from this. This is a prison. And as he said, brother, what you're saying, Hold on, hold on. What you're saying, I don't think people understand what you just said cuz you said it a little fast.
